Oltman Ahlers
Active 1800-1827
The son of Oltman Alders from Oldenburg and Dorothea of Bengal. Married Maria Magdalena Hauptfleish, the widow of Jan Casper Brevis, a silversmith.
Rare Cape silver double beaker in the form of a wine barrel by Oltman Ahlers (new recorded makers mark) circa 1812, set with two Dutch ‘silver rider’ ducatons dated 1758 and 1761. The ducatons feature a mounted knight on horseback and the crowned arms of the United Netherlands on the reverse, with a shield indicating Amsterdam, the province of minting.
