Marthinus Lourens Smith
Active 1757- 1806
Born in 1722, he was from Aalborg in Denmark and he arrived at the Cape on the 27th of October 1757. Married four times, firstly to Engela van den Burg on the 8th of May 1763, secondly to Maria Elizabeth Erasmus on the 7th of April 1765, thirdly to Elizabeth Catharina de Bruyn on the 18th of April 1784 and finally to Anna Catharina Volschenk on the 13th of July 1788. He had 10 children all by Maria Elizabeth Erasmus. He died on the 18th of March 1806. Recorded working at 4 Boerepleyn in 1800.
Cape silver sugar bowl, Martinus Lourens Smith, 19th century urn-shaped with beaded borders, the sides applied with a pair of rope-twist handles, on a spreading circular foot and square base, the semi-domed cover with bud and leaf finial, 365g, 17cm high.
